Old Villages, Ancient Cities

ovac cover

The  “Old Villages, Ancient Cities” day excursion takes you on a fascinating day trip through Apokoronas where you will be introduced to one of the oldest cities on Crete, featuring Hellenic, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman structures, an ancient neolithic settlement, and an early Byzantine chapel. The morning part of this excursion takes us on a leisurely walk around one of the most exciting ancient settlements in Crete. We visit a magnificent theatre dating back to Hellenic and Roman times, and walk through the area of the ancient city itself. After visiting the ruins of the Roman villa and the original entrance area to the ancient city, our excursion takes us to an excellently preserved Tholos grave dating back to neolithic times.

We visit a wonderful example of early Byzantine religious architecture and make our way to our rendex-vous for a light lunch in an authentic traditional taverna where we mingle with the local shepherds and farmers.

In the afternoon we take it easy and enjoy a fantastic tour through some sleepy old villages and the fabulous natural beauty of the Cretan landscape. We end up i one of the most picturesque villages of Apokoronas for afternoon coffee before we make our way back to Georgioupolis by 17.30.
